A typical american breakfast is composed of  either cereals,  hot cakes, waffles, breads with eggs, sausages, bacon or ham with jam, jelly or butter.   If you love to travel to different places, you will definitely find on some hotel/resorts menu this option or as others called it continental breakfast.

Definitely one thing is for sure, there’s no rice included on the menu.  So, if your a typical Filipino, you will find this breakfast not satisfying on your stomach since Filipinos wanted to start their day with a heavy meal.

Since breakfast is very important since the strength you will be getting for the day will depends on it, make sure that you will be getting the best as not to have an empty stomach.

How to make Lumpiang Sariwa or Fresh Spring Rolls

My family loves to eat Fresh Spring rolls or more commonly known as Lumpiang Sariwa.  But since opportunity arises and the fact that the place we were buying has recently burned down (too bad) , I thought it would be good to try to make it myself.

Honestly, I’m not confident to make them since I really hate  it when i failed to do something I really wanted to do but of course, i wouldn’t know the result unless i try them.  So, with much courage and with the help of the net,  it’s time to cook my own version of  Lumpiang Sariwa.


Since you cannot find in the market a readily available lumpia wrapper for your fresh lumpia, you have to make the wrapper yourself (here’s the procedure for the lumpia wrapper). Some love to include shrimps or pork but since I encourage my family to eat more vegetables, this recipe does not include shrimps or pork.

How to make Lumpiang Sariwa or Fresh Spring Rolls

This ingredients is for the filling.
  • Ingredients:
  • 1 tablespoon cooking oil
  • 2cloves garlic; minced
  • 1 tablespoon onion; minced
  • 1tablespoon low-sodium soy sauce
  • 1 tablespoon sugar
  • 2 cups carrots; sliced thinly
  • 1 cup garbanzos or chick peas
  • 2 cups bamboo shoots, sliced thinly
  • 1 cup apple , sliced thinly
  • 1/3 cup of water
  • 6 pcs Lettuce leaf
  • Salt and black pepper to taste
  1. Prepare your lumpia wrapper and set aside.
  2. Heat oil in a pan over medium heat.
  3. Sauté garlic and onion. Simmer until it changes color.
  4. Add soy sauce and sugar.
  5. Add garbanzos and carrots. Let it simmer for 3 minutes.
  6. Add bamboo shoots or other vegetables and stir fry for about 2 minutes
  7. Add water. Add the salt and pepper to taste.
  8. Simmer for 5 to 10 minutes or until vegetable is cooked. (make sure not to over cooked)
  9. Remove from the heat and set aside.
  10. Place the lettuce leaf on the prepared lumpia wrapper.
  11. Put two to three tablespoon of vegetable mixture over the lettuce.
  12. Add the sliced apple.
  13. Fold the bottom and wrapped the crepe carefully.
  14. Pour the sauce on top with the crushed peanuts or minced garlic if you wish.
Since apple become part of my daily diet, I thought it would be nice to include them on my lumpiang sariwa and the kids love it.  I’m so overwhelmed with the result that I totally forgot to take a picture of the brown sauce but nonetheless it’s really easy to prepare.
Lumpiang Sariwa  Sauce


4 cloves garlic, 2 minced and the remaining with skin on
1 cup peanuts, crushed ( pili nuts taste best too )
1 tbsp peanut oil
1/4 cup brown sugar
2 tablespoon  patis
1 cup water
3 tbsp cornstarch, dissolved in 1/2 cup water

Cooking Procedures :

  • Combine brown sugar, salt, patis  in a saucepan.
  • Bring to a boil.
  •  Add cornstarch solution and stir until thick, about a minute.
  •  Remove from heat. Serve on top of the Lumpiang sariwa and top it with the crushed peanuts.  You may add the remaining minced garlic in the sauce if you love it.
  • Makes about 1-1/2 cups.

This can be your side dish, snacks or even a viand.  I made some and put it on the refrigerator and eat them for dinner and it tastes really nice since the flavor already sink in.  I hope you like it. Enjoy till next adventure 🙂
